Delving Rome: indelible encounter

inside the Roman Coloseo
"Rome is not a city like the others. It is a great museum, a living room to tiptoe  cross." - Alberto Sordi

Yes, it is. When i'm dreaming of Rome, i thought all my knowledge gained from my social sciences classes were enough. As a culture vulture  and a history predator myself, i felt like i am stepping back to history as i walked in every alley of Rome.

Rome is the Capital City of Italy, it is also the capital of the Lazio region. it is also the most populated city in Italy and also ranked 4th in the European Union. if we will go back to History, this city was already written in the pages of books as early as 753BC, finding Roman mythologies. The city was well known to be the founder of western civilization. Even looking at the Bible, we can see the Roman empire ruling most of the earth at the time. but upon the fall of western empire, Rome was then slowly being taken over by the political control of the Papacy, and then as the history goes on and on up to date.

why i love this city? when i first stepped in the city of Rome, the ambiance of mixture of modernity and the nostalgia of the past was seen everywhere. buildings were preserved as is.

Roman Colosseum

one of the symbols of Rome was the Colosseum. it was and is still a symbol of Ancient Rome. it was dated from 70-80 AD. it was known to be the largest apitheater built during the Roman Empire and a total of 60,000 guests can occupy the said coloseum. What was this used for? if you have watched some famous gladiator movies like, Gladiator, Spartacus and The Arena, you might have already the idea. Yes, this amphitheater was used for gladiator combats.

The Pantheon

as you can see from my photos, looking at the outside, the pantheon may be seen as a rectangular building with pillars, however going inside, you will actually realise that it was actually a dome. Pantheon was a Roman temple back in the days but in the present time, this serves as a church for Roman Catholics. this was built during the reign of Augustus 27-14AD. as i said earlier, it is a rectangular vestibule links the porch to the rotunda, which is under a coffered concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. (source: wikipedia). we were asked to visit the place before sundown because the only source of light was the central opening to the sky which can actually lit the whole building.

Trevi Fountain

have you seen the 2010 movie, When in Rome? when a New Yorker tries to steal some coins from the Trevi Fountain? How about the classic 1953 movie, the Roman Holiday featuring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. these were just few of the movies that featured the world famous trevi fountain.  it is actually famous during our time because of the "coin throwing", coins were purportedly thrown with the right hand over the left shoulder. And according to wikipedia, there was an estimate of 3,000 euros were thrown in the fountain per day.

Piazza Navona

This piazza was featured in the movie Angels and Demons. At present it served as a tourist destination and surrounding the piazza were several Italian ristorantes can be found.

Rome, is a magical, magnificent city. every minute i am in the city feels like i am traveling thru time.

here is where the ancient and modernity meets. this is actually a shopping mall with restaurants.
if it would only possible, i wish i could go back to Rome and take a feel of what the Romans (locals) do. Enjoy Rome! ciao!
